May is recognized as National Women’s Health Month, and in this current landscape, it’s more crucial than ever for women of all ages to make both their physical and mental well-being a priority. This includes nutrition, hormone balance, detoxification, stress management, sexual or reproductive health, and other lifestyle factors that contribute to optimal functioning.
Personally, I have been feeling a little tired, no…… weary more aptly describes my current status. Like you, dear reader I have experienced the endless feeling of “Groundhog Day,” the redundancy of daily life activities without the possibility of something to look forward to. Day after day rising to what is surely a day of the same thing, dress for work or not, begin work, eat, eat some more, work, maybe have a grocery shopping trip, try to find a vaccine appointment, work, come home (or just go into the next room),maybe exercise but surely eat and possibly drink again!Watch the talking heads, go to bed and then start it all over again.
Yay !!! Friday is here but what difference does that really make?
Do you ever wonder how life can get so out of balance? It occurs to me that we just wake up one day feeling miserable, feeling like we do not know who we are anymore and really not understanding how we got to this point. Sort of like driving home from work and pulling into the driveway, but not remembering any of the stoplights, other cars or even the turns along the way. It is a dangerous business, not being aware (also known as “being present”) because it is in that state of distraction, where we can begin to wander off the path of balance and harmony, and directly into misery. That lack of attention is precisely why we end up feeling like we are totally “out of options”.
The good news is you do have options - being aware or present to the fact that you are out of balance is both the key, and the first step back to the “You” that “You” want to be. Awareness can come about in a multitude of ways; hopefully, it will not be the “universal baseball bat upside the head” in the form of a diagnosis. In my 25 years+ of experience treating patients, beginning with allied health, and now complementary/integrative medicine, the “diagnosis wakeup call” is the most profound, and seemingly most motivating of them all. My practice specialty is prevention, prevention from reaching the distracted “zombie” state, and prevention of the subsequent disease/disorder states that provide the devastating wakeup calls.
I believe video is a way for those individuals who do not want to read an entire article/posting to receive the information. It can be concise and attention holding in a way that is conducive to different learning styles.
I will be blogging on everyday issues of health and wellness here as well as posting weekly video blogs on youtube.
February, the month of love, sweethearts and chocolate not necessarily in that order, of course. Picture this; you are getting ready to go out with your sweetheart to celebrate Valentines Day. While getting ready, you feel that subtle nervous tension that comes from anticipation of your 2008 Valentine. You want everything to be perfect, EVERYTHING! Suddenly you catch a glimpse of your face in the mirror, you stop, turn and face the mirror. In an instant it has become your judge, jury and well you know. It is the horror of all horrors, ………..you are OLD. For a second you have the thought of smashing the mirror and running, in medical anti-aging circles this is called the smash and run secondary to extreme contact with reality.
You open an inquiry, when did this happen? When did I pass the point of no return?
2007 was an interesting year for me personally. I ended a long term relationship, developed a practice in Bradenton and then was forced to suddenly leave it, started practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, came to terms with my inability to make things turn out the way that I wanted them to and oh yeah almost met my maker in a morning car accident that left me hanging upside down by my seatbelt. Don’t know how many of you have had this experience or one like it but I am here to tell you there’s not much you can do from that position. It is the ultimate surrender especially for someone like me who is used to being in control all the time. Hanging there I was unable to control much except my thoughts and even that was a stretch. It was almost like some cosmic force outside of this dimension said “ok….we told you we were in control…or did you miss that email????”
Although many people were there to help I have never felt so alone in my entire existence on this planet. I also had a profound feeling of gratitude, almost felt like I had been given a grand wakeup call and thankful I was and am able to answer that call.
